Probiotics for Kid: Different Types and What to Consider

Probiotics are popular supplement that supports healthy microbiome and promotes gut health for people of all ages. Children, in particular, may benefit from probiotics if they have digestive disorders such as constipation, diarrhea, and Irritable bowel syndrome. Probiotics can also help temper the effects of antibiotics and reduce the number of medications your child is taking. However, which type of probiotics to choose largely depends on your child’s needs.


If you plan on giving probiotics to your kids whether, for health-boosting reasons or to maintain their overall gut health, you need to talk with your child’s GP first. Based on the complexity of probiotics, consider these things before introducing them to probiotics.

Remember that there are different probiotic supplements. There are different strains and each may have a different effect on the body. Some probiotic supplements have one strain while others contain several strains. When choosing probiotics for your kids, it’s important to target a specific illness with the right probiotic species and strains.

Probiotic supplements are not regulated by the FDA. So, you must seek your child’s physician first before you decide on introducing them to probiotics.

  1. Number of CFUs

Probiotics are measured in CFU or colony-forming units. When choosing probiotic supplements for kids, choose those that contain 5 to 10 billion CFUs.


Probiotic types to consider


  • Gummies

If your child isn’t fun with liquid, chewable tablets, or powder, gummies are a fun, delicious, and easy way for them to get their daily dose of beneficial microbes. Most gummies contain at least 3 to 5 billion CFUs per serving. Gummies are recommended for children ages 3 and up.

  • Foods

Getting probiotics from foods is still the most convenient way of adding good microbes to your child’s daily needs. The most common probiotic foods include cheese, yogurt, buttermilk, and pickles. Besides consuming foods with probiotics, probiotic supplements are another way to boost beneficial bacteria in the body.

  • Melts

Often sold as flavored cubes or sticks, probiotic melts dissolve into your kid's mouth just like candy and are recommended for kids 3 years and older.

  • Chewable

Probiotic chewable is super kid-friendly, and its definitely parent-approved. The chewable form has less sugar and artificial ingredients. They don’t require refrigeration, so you can keep them on your counter or take them with you wherever you go. Probiotic chewable are suitable for children 2 years of age and up.

  • Easy to swallow pearl

Pearl-like probiotic supplements are easier for kids to swallow since they are smaller than large tablets. Children aged 4 years and over can take probiotic supplements with the pearls.

  • Liquids

Liquid probiotics contain no added sugar, artificial flavors, or colors. It’s free from allergens and glutens, and it’s super easy to mix into foods or liquids. Liquid probiotics are recommended for infants or babies up to 2-3 years old.
