Can Probiotic Yogurts Cause Diarrhea?

Probiotic yogurt is one of the most widely used probiotic food. In addition to providing probiotic health benefits, it is extremely rich in protein, calcium, and B vitamins. Direct consumption of live bacteria increases beneficial microflora in the intestinal tract.

Probiotics in Yogurt

Yogurt helps maintain a healthy digestive tract. In yogurt, bacteria that produce lactic acid are added to milk to soured and thicken the product. The basic cultures or probiotics used to make yogurt are Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Streptococcus thermophilus.

What Causes Diarrhea?

  1. Viruses. Rotavirus is a common cause of acute childhood diarrhea. The virus that causes coronavirus disease is also associated with gastrointestinal symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  2. Lactose intolerance. Lactose is a sugar found in milk and other dairy products. It can increase with age because levels of the enzyme that helps digest lactose drop as you get older.
  3. Fructose. Fructose is a sugar found naturally in fruits and honey. It can lead to diarrhea in people who have trouble digesting it.
  4. Surgery. Partial intestine or gallbladder removal surgeries can sometimes cause diarrhea.
  5. Bacteria and parasites. Exposure to pathogenic bacteria from contaminated food or water leads to diarrhea. When traveling in developing countries, diarrhea caused by bacteria and parasites is often called traveler's diarrhea.
  6. Medications. Some antibiotics can cause diarrhea by disturbing the natural balance of bacteria in your intestines. Other drugs that cause diarrhea are anti-cancer drugs and antacids with magnesium.
  7. Other digestive disorders. Several other conditions can cause chronic diarrhea, including IBS, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease, microscopic colitis, and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

So, Does Probiotic Yogurt Actually Cause Diarrhea?

Yogurt may help prevent or treat diarrhea related to infection. Taking probiotics along with antibiotics reduces your risk of diarrhea caused by infection. Healthy bacteria also help in alleviating symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis.
