Is It Okay to Take probiotics Every Day?

Probiotics are increasingly becoming popular every day. Unlike medicines, probiotics are a natural supplement. Instead of using them as a quick fix, they should be taken as part of a daily health regime. Although, in some cases, they can be used for a short time alongside other medications such as antibiotics.

Why should you take them every day?

Most people choose to take probiotics daily, but others pick and choose when to take them. Regardless of how you use probiotics, remember that many factors can negatively affect your gut flora.

Take this into consideration. Many factors can negatively affect the good colonies in your gut. Your lifestyle, medications, the toxins in the air-all can disrupt the balance of your gut flora. So, it makes sense to repopulate the lost good bacteria with probiotic supplements.

How long does it take for probiotics to work?

Maybe you have tried taking probiotic supplements before. Have you wondered how long you need to take it or if it works? Well, the answer depends on why you are taking it, how much you are taking and what type of probiotic supplements you are taking.

  • First, different probiotic brands have different numbers of CFUs and the type of species. They also have different uses and doses, so it's essential that you read and understand the information on the label. How they work also varies from brand to brand. That’s why it’s vital to get as much information about the brand you want to buy before buying them.
  • Secondly, the symptoms or conditions you are trying to treat will influence how probiotic supplement works and how you will see results. Improvement of symptoms may take anywhere between a few weeks to a few months. If you consume probiotics as part of general gut health, you are more likely to take it awhile before you see any results. However, if you are taking it to help relieve diarrhea, you may see faster results.
  • Lastly, the type of species or strain and the number of CFUs in your probiotic supplement matter. There are many types of bacterial strain and each species and strain have their function. Talk to your doctor about which one might help you the most.

What research has to say about the daily use of probiotic supplements

Probiotic supplements may not work for everyone. Your age, unique gene makeup, your diet and the bacteria that’s in your body all affect how probiotic works. Here are other reasons probiotic supplements may not work:

  • You are using the wrong strain: Remember that different strain has their function. Not all strains work for every symptom. In choosing a probiotic supplement, find one that matches your needs.
  • Poor quality product: Yes, this is one of the biggest challenges with probiotics as they are fragile in nature. For a quality probiotic, they must survive manufacturing, storing, transporting and must survive the acidity in your stomach.
  • Too few CFU: Probiotic supplements must contain at least 1 to 10 billion CFUs per dose. Don’t go for lower CFUs.
