What are Dietary Supplements?

In the United States, many adults and children take one or more vitamins or other dietary supplements. Vitamins are not the only ingredients in nutritional supplements. Minerals, herbs, amino acids, enzymes, and other ingredients can also be included.

Dietary supplements come in many forms, including tablets, capsules, gummy, and powder forms, as well as drinks and energy bars. There are many supplements available, such as vitamins D and B12; minerals like calcium and iron; herbals like Echinacea and garlic; and products like glucosamine, probiotics, and fish oils.

A lot of dietary supplements are beneficial to health when taken with a healthy diet and a reliable product. Below are some effective dietary supplements that may benefit you. You should always consult your healthcare provider before beginning any diet or health program.  

  • Chamomile: This herb is popular for its ability to improve sleep patterns, soothe sore throats, relieve congestion, relieve nausea and heartburn, and stimulate appetite. In addition to acting as an antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory, it is also anti-inflammatory. Chamomile should not be taken if you are pregnant, allergic to daisies, or taking an anticoagulant.
  • Flax Seed: This powerful plant food can help combat chronic diseases, lower cholesterol, promote regular bowel movements, and maintain clear arteries. It has been shown that flaxseed may help reduce your risk of everything from heart disease to breast cancer, strokes, and diabetes. Omega-3 fatty acids, its main ingredient, help fight inflammation in the body and normalize the heartbeat. Moreover, flaxseed contains a lot of fiber that supports healthy digestion.
  • Omega-3 Fish Oil Supplements: It has been shown that this supplement helps lower blood pressure, decrease triglycerides and reduce the likelihood of stroke and heart attack. In addition, it also slows the development of plaque in the arteries.
  • Coenzyme Q-10: This is a popular supplement recently. If you always have a headache, lack of Coenzyme Q-10 may be the cause of this. It also helps stimulate metabolism, enhance your immune system, and lower blood pressure.
  • John’s Wort: This is a herbal supplement that is commonly used for the treatment of stomach upset, insomnia, mild depression, nausea, skin burns, wounds, and other skin irritations. When taken as the only supplement, St. John’s Wort is one of the most effective dietary supplements on the market. It may lessen the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, so be careful if you are using both.


Risks of Dietary Supplements

Lots of supplements have active ingredients that have strong biological effects on the body. This might make them risky in some situations and hurt or complicate your health. For instance, the following actions can lead to harmful even life-threatening consequences.

  • Using supplements with drugs
  • Combining supplements
  • Substituting supplements for prescription drugs
  • Taking too much of some supplements, such as iron, vitamin A, or vitamin D

Some supplements can also have unwanted effects before, during, and after surgery. For this reason, make sure to inform your physician, including your pharmacist about any supplements you are taking.
